Find the footprint that fits your space.

A 16 × 20 dining and lounge example.

This example shows a dining table and a separate seating area under a 16 × 20 pavilion. Final fit depends on your furniture dimensions, space for pulled-out chairs, and clearances between posts.

Illustrative 16 by 20 pavilion layout with a six-seat dining table, sofa, two lounge chairs, and six post locations
Example furniture layout only. Final fit depends on your furniture and the clear space between posts.

Start with what needs to fit.

Start with your table, chairs, or lounge furniture. Measure with chairs pulled out, then allow space to walk around them. Leave additional room for a grill, serving area, or a second seating group. Send us a measured sketch so we can check the layout with you.

Working with an existing concrete pad.

Inset the posts a minimum of 6 inches from the pad edge to help avoid cracking the concrete when installing post-base anchors. Allow for this setback when choosing your pavilion’s post footprint. Follow any greater anchor edge-distance requirements in your approved plans or the anchor manufacturer’s instructions. Slab thickness, condition, and suitability for the pavilion must also be checked by your local contractor or engineer.

MeasurementWhy it matters
Available site areaDefines the space you can work within, including setbacks and nearby structures.
Post footprintOur listed sizes describe the post footprint, rather than the roof coverage. Your approved layout drawings show the exact post locations and dimension references.
Clear openingDetermines the actual space between posts for furniture and movement.
Roof footprintIncludes roof overhangs, so roof-coverage square footage is larger than the listed post-footprint square footage. Allow for this larger footprint when planning clearances to buildings and property boundaries.
Post heightMeasured to the underside of the header. Standard post height is 8 feet; 9, 10, 11, and 12 feet are also available, along with custom heights. Roof peak height is a separate measurement.
Choose the right size

Start with what you want under the roof: a dining table, lounge seating, an outdoor kitchen, or room for a larger gathering. Include space to walk around furniture and between activity areas.

Compare space for gathering.

Starting sizeNominal footprintSuggested dining group
12 × 16 ft192 sq ft4–6 people
16 × 20 ft320 sq ft6–8 people
20 × 20 ft400 sq ft10–12 people
20 × 24 ft480 sq ft12–16 people

These are conservative seating suggestions for dining with room to move. Furniture, post locations, and clear openings affect the usable space. Other sizes and custom dimensions are available.

Post footprint and roof footprint are different. Roof overhangs extend beyond the posts. Clear space between posts is another measurement. Your approved project drawings identify the post layout, clear openings, and roof overhangs. Use those measurements when planning furniture, setbacks, and foundation work; nominal square footage is not the clear usable floor area.
